KOTC Settlement - Mt Pleasant MI

Friday June 13th. Time for the King Of The Cage to once again make its presence felt in Mt. Pleasant Michigan at the Soaring Eagle Resort with 16 great fights. The atmosphere in the event center was pretty electric with a packed crowd. The KOTC has been having several events here a year now so their getting quite a fan base here.

Fight #1 135 lb Amateur tournament. Richard Blair Vs Nick Boucher.

Rd. 1

After a short feeling out process Nick goes for a head kick which is grabbed by Rich starting to take Nick down. Amazingly Nick almost turns it into a triangle on the way down but ends up just pulling a closed guard. Rich manages to work his way loose to stand up, just barely avoiding a knee to the face on the way up. The two jostle for position against the cage for the remainder of the round.

Rd.2

The fight turns into a ground war almost immediately with Nick getting a takedown then getting side control. Nick starts throwing some serous hammer fists but Rich is defending well. Rich manages to pull guard with some good hip movement and begis to stand up. On the way up Nick gets a tighr guillotine with 20 seconds left in the round. Rich toughs it out till the round ends

Rd. 3

More of the same however Rich manages to get Nicks back but Nick sneaked out the back door reversing it. Nick sinks in a RNC at 2:02 of the third round, advancing to the finals of the 135lb tourney.

Fight #2 135 lb Amateur Tournament Tony Huff vs Brandon Bandlow

Basically Brandon goes for a take down and get caught in a Guillotine in 36 seconds. Huff advances to tournament final.

Fight #3 135 lb Amateur Tournament (Alternate bout) Steve Becker vs Adam Cunningham

Steve and Adam immediately exchange blows, Adam lands a good right so Steve ties it up, spins Adam forcing him into the cage. After some jockeying for position Adam gets underhoooks allowing him to lift Steve off his feet and get a hard take down. Adam gets full mount and starts the GNP. Steve does a good job of Almost bucking Adam off but Adam grabs Steve's left wrist securing a Kimura. Adam Cunningham via Kimura at 1:58 of round 1

Fight #4 John Lloyd vs Damon Dyer 170 lb Amateur Tournament

They feel each other out for a bit, Damon gets John over to the cage and pulls off a great slam. He goes right to side control and secures Johns wrist behind his back. John is able to defend it for a while however once Damon is able to position for better leverage John is forced to tap at the 1:57 mark. Dyer advances to tournament final

Daron goes for quick take down, gets caught in a guillotine and taps out in 19 seconds. Edwards advances to tournament final

Fight #6 Jake Himes vs Kyle Morasky 170 lb Amateur Tournament Alternate bout

Kyle gets taken down but pulls rubber guard almost immediately trying for a triangle. Jake is able to stand picking Kyle up and slamming him hard ala Rampage style. Wow! After a couple blows herb Dean quickly steps in and calls the fight.
Winner: Jake Himes via KO (Slam) at 1:44 of round 1.

Fight #7 Brandon Hance vs Dave Wright (Amateur bout)

This was the first fight to go the distance but it basically went like this. They would make some short exchanges, Dave would take Brandon down and maintain a dominant position. Keeping busy enough to keep it from being stood back up too many times. Brandon did have a tight triangle with 20 seconds left in the 2nd but Dave toughed it out till the bell rang. More dominance by Dave in the 3rd. Dave Wright via Unanimous Decision after 3 three rounds.

Fight #8 Steve Cotterman vs Ed Kramer (Amateur bout)

Sorry I blinked during this one. Ed gets taken down, pushed into the fence and GNP’d in 20 seconds. Steve Cotterman via TKO.

Fight #9 Justin Jaynes vs Jorge Sarat (Amateur bout)

Jorge gets taken down but quickly pulls guard. He almost secures a triangle but when he realizes it’s not working he uses some great hip movement to work loose and stand it back up. Jorge lands a hard left, knocking Justin down. He uses some quick strikes to help get full mount and gets the TKO at the 2:07 mark

Fight #10 Rodney Sleepers vs Charles Cosens

Rd. 1

Great fight! Sleepers gets a quick take down but Charles does a great job nullifying any offense Rod can come up with and it is stood up in about a minute. They spend the rest of the round basically going toe to toe in the striking dept. The bell sounds to end round 1

Rd. 2

Charlie opens quick with a good right and gets a take down in side control. Sleepers manages to escape and stand it up. Charlie goes for another take down but this time gets caught in a guillotine that he can’t escape from. Charlie taps out at 2:46 of the 2nd round.

The intermission came next for about 20 minutes where I got a shot of myself with Herb Dean. What a cool guy! He spent most of the time talking with the fans, even jumping over the VIP gate to let folks get some shots with him. I couldn't resist!

Fight #11 Josh Taibl vs Miles Jury (Professional bout)

Josh and Miles clinch up and trade knee’s in the middle of the cage for a while. Miles is able to get under hooks, lifts him up and takes him to the mat. GNP ensues and Miles gets a TKO victory at 1:20 of round 1

Fight #12 Angelo Popofski vs Brad Burrick (Professional bout)

Rd.1

Right off the bat Angelo and Brad start trading off, jockeying for position and throwing knees. Brad gets a cut in the process but it doesn’t seem to be bothering him. They continue at this pace till the round ends.

Rd. 2

They start the round with strikes but Angelo gets a take down, moves to brads back and secures a RNC. Angelo Popofski via Rear Naked Choke at 1:10 of round 2

Fight #13 Nick Boucher vs Tony Huff 135 lb Amateur Tournament Final

Nick almost instantly gets a take down, starts the GNP and gets a TKO at 2:06 of the first round.

Fight #14 Justin Edwards vs Damon Dyer 170 lb Amateur Tournament Final

Justin comes out getting the better of the stand up. Damon goes for a take down but gets stuffed. Justin takes his back and secures a choke. Winner: Justin Edwards via Rear Naked Choke at 2:46 of round 1

Fight #15 Terry Davinney vs Chad Herrick (Professional bout)

Terry basically dominates from the beginning taking down Chad, going to mount and throwing strikes. Chad gives up his back and Terry wastes with the Ground and Pound. Winner: Terry Davinney via TKO at 2:12 of round 1

Fight #16 Lazar Stojadinovic vs Matt Jaggers Bantamweight Championship (145 lb)

Both fighters come out looking very determined especially during the stare down

Rd. 1

Both Lazar and Matt come out banging. Throwing bombs and excellent leg kicks. Mid way threw the round Lazar lands a Hughe right causing Matt to drop down grabbing Lazar in a double leg. Mat eventually gets the take down. They spend the rest of the round jockeying for position.

Rd. 2

More of the same exciting action however Matt seems to be getting the best of it. Lazar gets hit by some real good shots but seems to be shaking them off for the most part. Matt does get a take down and tries to get in some GNP shots however Lazar defends well.

Rd. 3

well I blinked again. Lazar and mat come out banging again. Lazar lands a huge shot and drops Matt. He goes in for the kill with a few more punches but Herb Dean steps in at 21 seconds into the round. Lazar Stojadinovic is the new KOTC bantam weight champion

Lazar Stojadinovic getting the belt strapped on by KOTC owner Terry Trebilcock

the new champ poses with Terry and the ring girls

Well that was the end of another awesome KOTC show at the Soaring eagle. There were a lot of good ground wars tonight and I was really impresses with the educated crowd in Mt. Pleasant. The Production was great and once again the KOTC staff put on a first class show!

Till next time, Peace out!

Fight 15    MAIN EVENT KOTC 145 lb.  WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Joe Voisin  vs  Matt Jaggers
Round 1
Voisin appears to be the stronger fighter and tries to utilize the skills that won him a state championship in wrestling.  Jaggers stays calm and defends Voisins attempts to take him down with some uncanny wrestling skills of his own.  Jaggers seems to have the upper hand on their feet and on the mat.  Jaggers is landing hard shots and Voisin keeps coming but looks confused on how to beat this guy.  Round 1 goes to Jaggers.
Round 2
Voisin looks winded as the round starts.  Again Jaggers is punishing Voisin on their feet and Voisin cant seem to take him down.  If the fight continued this way Jaggers will cruise to an easy victory.  Now Jaggers takes Voisin down and mounts.  Jaggers rains down hammer fists, Voisin makes a mistake and gives up his back but but eventually escapes.  Voisin, now back to his feet, takes Jaggers down but the round ends before he can do anything with it.  Round 2 Jaggers
Round 3
Round 3 is more of the same, Voisins eye is swollen and he is bleeding from under his right eye.  Jaggers has controlled almost every aspect of the fight and with Voisin exausted it looks to remain that way.  Jaggers is just punishing Voisin who tries for a take down but Jatake downggers enTKOds up on top anbattlingsingle legtake downd quickly  mounts him  Voisin again gives up his back as Jaggers pounds on him.  Voisin can't take it anymore and he taps several times. The corner men fly into the ring to celebrate however Cecil Pepoles says he didnt see the tap, and tells Jaggers corner to get out of the cage, the fight is not over.
Round 4
Voisin gets aexhaustedtake down second chance but still can't muster any offense.  Jaggers stays calm and continues to do what got him here.  Voisin is just gassed and cant get anything going.  Round 4 is all Jaggers, and he is pitching a shutout in the fight.
Round 5
Jaggers takes Voisin down and once again Voisin gives up his back, a habit he must break.  Voisin eventually is able to shake him and stands once more. He knows he needs a KO to win and starts swinging hard, but he is so tired they are easily seen by Jaggers who just keeps throwing his jab and keeping distance from Voisin.  Finally Voisin takes Jaggers down but Jaggers defends well, Jaggers is holding Voisin to his chest and Voisin cant posture up.  Jaggers flips Voisin and gains side control, then moves to half guard as the fight ends.
Winner  Jaggers unanimous decision and the new KOTC world Bantam weight champ. While addressing the crowd Matt promised the first shot to Lazar Stojadovic, who he fought to a no contest back in November.
We would like to thank Soaring Eagle and the KOTC for their hospitality and for putting on a great night of mixed martial arts action!

at the Andiamo, Warren Michigan

Phil Davey with Dustin Will

We attended the "Trials of Affliction event Saturday nightput on by Midwest MMA Productions, home of theMichigan Unarmed Combat League. Midwest MMA Productions is owned by Richard Lictawa Sr and Jim Arnone, two area businessmen.

The event kicked off Friday night at Dooley's IrishTavern in Clinton township, where they conducted a meet and greet followed up with the weigh ins of some of the MUCLfighters. Dooley's did a great job with the beverages and the atmosphere, along with Phil "the voice" Davey doing what he does best, getting the crowd hyped with the microphone. Phil also runs Rough House Productions and has an event coming up February 28th called Battle On The Bay III being held at Gulinano's Lounge in Chesterfield Michigan.

Cage at the andiamo: by: David

We arrived at the Andiamo Saturday night around 6pm. In time to snap some shots of the fighters and get an idea of what kind of mind set they were in. We were very impressed with the fighters participating on the Trials Of Affliction card. These weren't a bunch of street fighters just coming to the cage for bragging rights. These guys were warriors, wellversed in manymartial arts and discipline's. They appeared to be well trained and in solid shape. After the photo shoot, Rich, very busy making final preparations, informed us of our table number. Andiamos was comprised of beautiful tables, made up with full service dinner ware, perfectly folded cloth napkins and an atmosphere like no other no other showwe'd been to. Included in the reasonable ticket price was an open bar with top shelf liquor, four course meal with fillet mignon as the main course. Bellies full of great food and a couple cocktails it was then fight time.

The card was very complete with 9 fights ranging from a couple heavy weights to a light weight title fight.A 10th was scheduled with Rich's son competinghowever his opponent did not show. A case of nerves perhaps.

Will Garner guillotine on Dennis Gilbert: by: David

Will Garner with a tight guillotine on Dennis Gilbert

the result: by: David

The result of that guillotine.

The matches started out with a bang with Dante Pinterpe shooting for a double leg take down and quickly mounting Jason Stevens. After some ground and pound Jason gave up his back and Dante sunk in arear naked chokecausing Jason to tap out 33 seconds into the 1st round. Wow!!

Preston Winfrey out worked Jeff Kabacinski in an awesomeback and fourth ground battle ending the fight via tap out at the 2:40 of the 2nd.

Kris Lush put on a clinic with a brutal Ground and pound victory over Justin Osborne in 1:52 of the first round.

In another great match, Luis Luna won out over Ray Kozack with a verbal submission at 1:14 of the 2nd.

As seen in the pictures Will Garner sunk in a tight guillotine on Dennis Gilbert putting him to sleep. Dennis showed some real heart in not tapping out proving he's one tough SOB!

A great BJJ battle was nextwhen Yanni Cavis and Paris Boyd stepped into the cage. It was back and forthin the1st round with neither really gaining an advantage. At about the 1:50 mark of the 2ndCavisput a huge slam on Boyd then attempted an ankle lock. Quickly realizing that was going nowhere he transitioned into a dominate position and pulled a deep arm bar out of nowhere. Boyd taped out at 2:34of the 2nd.

Jason ready to tap: by: David

Dan enjoying the fruits of his labor: by: David

Jason ready to tap out and Dan enjoying the

fruits of his labor

Heavy weights Nick Turco and Jonathan Ireland Banged it out until Nick started getting the upper hand. He grabbed Jason into a Muai Thai clinch and brought up a knee and aright head kickthat spurned an audible ooh!! from the crowd. Incredibly Jason fought back but was forced to verbally submit when Nick poured it on again. Great fight!

This lead us to the main event for the MUCL light weight title between Dan Langbeen and Jason Peterson. Both fighters made their entrance to the ring in great shape and with a determined look on their faces. Dan and Jason basically slugged it out in a toe to toe battle that had thepacked crowd of the Andiamo to their feet at the end of the1st round. Dan having enough of the stand up tried taking Jason down but lost position ending up on the bottom, He pulled guard and started jockeying for position eventually grabbing a kimura and forced Jason to tap outat1:52 of the 2nd round winning the belt. Another action packedawesome fight and a great win for Dan Langbeen!

All and all it was an incredible night of action in a great atmosphere. The referee for the nights event was none other than Dom O'Grady who is coming off a huge win at KOTC and will be competing again at the XFO event in Crystal Lake Illinois on February 23rd. Again announcing the fights was Phil "the voice Davey who worked the crowd the entire night. Sitting at our table was none other than KOTC bad ass and former Pride alumni Jason Ireland. Also in attendance was Kirk Maltby of the Detroit Red Wing, WEC contender Brendan Sequin, kick boxer Sam "the cat Mishka and boxing great Thomas "Hit man"Hearns. You kidding me!! What a fabulous night of fights, great food and a pumped up crowd. What could be better!
